Why Clary Homes

Family on the same address, that's priceless.

A room addition gives you the space you're short of without the cost of moving. An ADU does that and can earn rent, house a parent, or give an adult kid a front door of their own. Either way, the job lives or dies on two things: how well it matches the existing house, and how early the permits are sorted.

Every project starts with a free visit to your home. We look at the lot, the setbacks, where utilities run and how the new space will connect to the old, and only then start drawing. If you'd like the yard around it considered while we're there, just say. If it's the building only, that's what we'll build.

  1. 01

Designed to look like it was always there

Roof lines, window proportions, stucco and trim matched to the existing house, so the addition reads as part of the home rather than a box attached to it.

  2. 02

    Permits planned from day one

Setbacks, height limits, parking rules and utility connections are checked before anything is drawn. California's ADU rules have opened a lot of doors, and we'll tell you straight what your lot allows.

  3. 03

See it in 3D before it's built

Floor plan, elevations and how the new space sits on the lot, all shown in a 3D design before anything is submitted. The design is $500, credited back in full when you sign.

  4. 04

Just the building, or a bit more. Your call

Plenty of people come to us for the addition or the ADU and nothing else, and we build exactly that. If you'd like a patio, a path or landscaping around it looked at at the same time, mention it at the consultation and we'll fold it into the same plan. No pressure either way.

"The best addition is the one the neighbours can't find."

Good to know

Questions people ask before they call.

Straight answers on price, timing and what's included. Anything else, the consultation is free and there's no obligation.

01How much does an ADU or room addition cost in San Diego?

It depends on the size, whether it's attached or detached, the finishes and how far utilities have to run, so additions and ADUs are quoted after a site visit. You can get a rough estimate over the phone. Terms and conditions apply.

02What's the difference between a room addition and an ADU?

A room addition extends your existing house: a bedroom, a bigger kitchen, a second living room. An ADU is a self-contained unit with its own kitchen, bathroom and entrance, either attached to the house, converted from a garage, or detached in the yard. ADUs can be rented; additions can't.

03Do I need a permit?

Yes, for both. We handle the drawings and the submission as part of the job, and we check what your lot allows before anything is designed so there are no surprises at the city.

04Can I build an ADU on my lot?

Most single-family lots in California can now have at least one ADU, and many can have a junior ADU as well. Setbacks, height and utility access decide what fits. We'll tell you at the consultation.

05Can I convert my garage?

Usually, yes. Garage conversions are one of the most common ADU types and often the most cost-effective, since the shell is already there. We check the foundation, height and utilities first.

06How long does it take?

Longer than a yard project. Design and permitting typically take a few months, then construction runs from a few months for a conversion to longer for a detached build. You get a written schedule before work begins.

07Can I finance it?

Yes. Financing is available, and for an ADU the future rent is often part of the conversation. Ask at the consultation.

08Which areas do you cover?

All of San Diego County and some parts of Riverside County. It's always best to confirm your area first so we can tell you straight away whether we can take the project on.
