Why Clary Homes

Thirty years of improving SoCal houses.

A pergola is only worth having if you're under it at four in the afternoon in August. So we start with where the sun goes across your yard, where you'll put the table, and how much shade you actually want, then size and place the structure around that.

Every project starts with a free visit to your home. We look at the patio, the house wall, the ground it will anchor into and the view you don't want to block, and only then price it. If you'd like anything else considered while we're there, just say. If it's the pergola only, that's what we'll build.

  1. 01

Louvered or fixed, chosen for how you'll use it

Louvered roofs open for winter sun and close for summer shade or a light rain. Fixed slat pergolas are simpler and cost less. We'll tell you which one suits the spot, not which one is easier for us.

  2. 02

See it in 3D before it's built

Size, height, post positions and the shadow it throws at different times of day, all shown in a 3D design before anything is ordered. The design is $500, credited back in full when you sign.

  3. 03

Just the pergola, or a bit more. Your call

Plenty of people come to us for a pergola over an existing patio and nothing else, and we build exactly that. If you'd like lighting, pavers or an outdoor kitchen looked at at the same time, mention it at the consultation and we'll fold it into the same plan. No pressure either way.

"A pergola is where you'll create the best memories at four o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. We build for that."

Good to know

Questions people ask before they call.

Straight answers on price, timing and what's included. Anything else, the consultation is free and there's no obligation.

01How much does a pergola cost in San Diego?

It depends on the size, whether it's louvered or fixed, and what it anchors into, so a pergola on its own is quoted after a site visit. You can get a rough estimate over the phone. If you want the full yard done, the Super Six packages start at $19,999 with a 10 by 10 louvered pergola included. Terms and conditions apply.

02Louvered or fixed, which should I choose?

Louvered pergolas have roof slats that open and close, so you get sun in winter, shade in summer and cover in light rain. Fixed slat pergolas are simpler and cheaper. If you'll use the space year round, louvered is usually worth it. We'll recommend one for your yard at the consultation.

03Can it go over my existing patio?

Usually, yes. We check the surface and what's under it so the posts anchor properly. If the patio isn't sound enough to take the footings, we'll tell you what's needed rather than bolt into it and hope.

04Do I need a permit?

It depends on the size and whether it attaches to the house. We check what your property needs before anything is ordered, so permitting is part of the plan rather than a surprise later.

05How long does it take?

Once materials are on site, most pergolas go up in days, not weeks. The exact schedule depends on the size, the footings and access to the yard. You get a written schedule before work begins.

06Can you add lighting or a fan?

Yes. Lighting can be built into the pergola from the start, and it's the kind of thing that's easier to plan now than to add later. Mention it at the consultation and it goes into the same design.

07Can I finance it?

Yes. Financing is offered on every package, so the pergola can go in this season rather than in a few years.

08Which areas do you cover?

All of San Diego County and some parts of Riverside County. It's always best to confirm your area first so we can tell you straight away whether we can take the project on.
